South London Cares

Winter Wellbeing Project

South London Cares brings people aged 65 and over, together with their younger neighbours for fun, friendship and laughter across Southwark and Lambeth.

From October 2018 – March 2019 they’re running their Winter Wellbeing project, supporting older neighbours to stay warm, active, healthy and connected.

What they do:

  • Deliver blankets, hats, gloves and thermal socks
  • Winter Grants of up to £100, which can be used for high bills, winter coats and other items to help battle the cold.
  • Connect people to organisations who can provide benefits and energy saving advice
  • 24 free social clubs that run year round (including, film nights, technology workshops, trips etc.).
  • Befriending

If you would like to refer someone over 65 to the project, please email Elyssa with their name, DOB, telephone number and what support they might need – they’ll be in touch with them within a week.

They’d love to visit your surgery for a couple of hours to speak to patients in the waiting room about the support they can offer – flu jab clinics are a particularly good time. They won’t need anything from you, just let them know a date and a time and they’ll be there, leaflets in hand.

Charting the Mayflower

In 1620 a group of people left England to start a new life across the Atlantic. 2020 marks the 400th anniversary of the departure of the Mayflower from the river’s edge in Rotherhithe.

On Thursday 22nd November, a free community lantern procession will take place in Rotherhithe and Bermondsey to mark the beginning of Illuminate Rotherhithe. It will begin at Mayflower Park at 5pm and arrive at Kings Stairs Gardens. Everyone is welcome to the free lantern-making workshops where they can make a lantern for the procession. For the dates of these workshops please see their leaflet.

For more information please get in touch with Georgia.

Tea Break Theatre

Men’s Shed Association

London Bubble Workshop, 5 Elephant Lane, SE16 4JD

Rotherhithe Shed

Set up in partnership by Bubble Theatre and Time & Talents, it aims to bring together older folks to put their practical skills to good use – fixing, making, whittling, drilling, sawing and generally tinkering.

Sessions are held twice a week on Monday mornings and Thursday afternoons (click for schedule), in a well equipped workshop where participants can work together on a range of practical activities. Skilled artists and technical experts are available to support the participants, and project ideas are strongly encouraged and developed. If you have something that needs mending or maintaining, be it a wobbly chair or a squeaky bike bring it along. Or if you want to help make and paint the new sign for the shed, or just make the tea – you are welcome.

For more information please contact Devon or visit their website.

A shed can also be found at Darwin Court, Southwark, SE17 1AD, 020 3828 4818.
