The Dragon Cafe

St George the Martyr, Dragon Cafe, The Crypt, Borough High Street, London, SE1 1JA

The Dragon Café is the flagship project of Mental Fight Club. It aims to be an open, welcoming group which puts on exciting, well-organised and inspirational creative events and programmes as well as simply being a place to be. It is a highly effective antidote to the loneliness and isolation which is so often prevalent in those who have been affected by mental illness.
A relaxing café and imaginative space, open to all, the Dragon Café is located in Borough and open every Monday from 12 midday to 8.30 pm.The Dragon Café provides an affordable, healthy menu each week, and a wide range of creative and well-being activities, all of which are free and open to all.No enrollment is required for groups, just turn up and take part, as much or as little as you like. Time & Talents

The Old Mortuary, St Marychurch Road, SE16 4JE

Social Contact Group, Tuesdays 1-3pm

This is a group for older women with mental health needs. It provides a supportive environment in which group members can socialisem chat and take part in regular contact. Members of the group undergo an assessment before joining.  To find out more please email Cindy or call 020 7232 5668.

 

Strength and Balance – Keep Fit, Wednesday 3.45-4.45pm

Pub Club – Tuesday 5 February, 6-8pm

Come on in from the cold weather and cosy up with a refreshing free drink at our monthly pub club. Swap stories and jokes with your pals and raise a glass to new friendships.

 

 

Technology Workshop – Monday 11 February, 2.30-4.30pm

Want to improve your confidence with your phone, tablet or laptop? Come along for a cuppa and bring your gadgets and technology-related questions with you! Quiz Club, Tuesday 12 February, 6.30-8.30pm

Put your knowledge to the test and find a good use for all those facts at our monthly quiz club. Team up with your neighbours and laugh your way to victory at this evening of fun and games.

 

 

Bollywood Dance Workshop, Tuesday 19 February, 6:30-8pm

Be transported to South Asia as we are joined by a professional Bollywood dancer for a thrilling evening of dance. Learn some new moves, enjoy the music or just come along for a tea to enjoy the atmosphere. Absolutely no experience necessary! Emily will be running this club.

Silver Fit 

Silver Fit encourage people to regain or to maintain their lifelong fitness. They aim to raise awareness of the benefits of exercise for the over 45s and help them to find regular exercise they enjoy. They provide opportunities to get active by arranging events and regular local groups. Activities range from Nordic walking and T’ai Chi to cheerleading, badminton and yoga.

Annual membership costs £5 per year and members get discounted rates on all of Silver Fit’s activities for seniors. You can sign up for membership on Silver Fit’s website. Please find the full list of Silver Sessions here.

 

Time & Talents

Body Confidence Workshop 

The Old Mortuary, St Marychurch St, Rotherhithe, SE16 4JE 

Join Time & Talents in their ‘Project Dare’ creative drama and arts workshop to develop a loving relationship with your body. The workshop is designed for men and women over the age of 16. No prior knowledge is required and the session is accessible for all shapes, sizes and fitness levels. This will take place on Saturday 9 February 2019, 1-4pm.

Docklands Settlement

Walking Football 

Docklands Settlement, 400 Salter Rd, London, SE16 5AA

The Docklands Settlement runs two walking football clubs in conjunction with Millwall Football Club. The first is for people with disabilities and takes place Mondays between 10.30 and 11.30am. On Fridays 10am-12pm, they hold a walking football club for elderly people, those with dementia or those just wanting to socialise! For more information about this and other sports activities, visit the Docklands Settlement’s website. Good Gym

From Southbank to Lordship Lane

Combining exercise with good deeds, join Good Gym to run the streets and help those in need. There are three types of run that you can take part in:

  • Mission runs: run to help out older people in Southwark with one-off tasks that they are no longer able to do on their own.
  • Coach runs: Over a million older people in the UK are always or often lonely. Visiting an older person as part of your weekly run can help  make a huge difference to their life.
  • Group runs: every week in Southwark you can join Good Gym to help out on local community projects, and running back all within 90 minutes!

Stave Hill Ecological Park

Stave Hill Ecological Park, behind Bacons College, Timber Pond Road, Rotherhithe, SE16 6AX

Stave Hill Ecological Park is a nature reserve and education facility home to a mosaic of habitats including  woodland, grassland, scrub and wetland, all bursting with life.

There are two volunteer groups who carry out conservation activities to help maintain and improve the habitats – everyone welcome!

Stave Hill Volunteers meet on the second Saturday of the month, 11am – 3.30pm.
The Stave Hill Regulars (walking group) meets every Wednesday,10am-4pm.

The Blue Bermondsey

Join The Blue Bermondsey Community in this free Christmas event on Sunday 2nd December from 12pm – 5pm. There will be food and drink, market stalls with a range of crafts and gifts ideal for Christmas, roasted chestnuts, mulled wine and more. Visit Santa and have a photo taken with him and the elves.

Other activities include: fire juggling, stilt walking, face painting, glitter tattoos, circus workshop and puppet theatre. Entry is free, some activities may require tokens. Please see their flyer.

Christmas at Surrey Docks Farm

Surrey Docks Farm is a working community farm that aims to educate local people about where their food comes from and promotes getting active outdoors.

They have all the usual farm animals, as well as food-growing gardens. Open 7 days a week, 10am – 4pm. Entry is free.

Christmas Day !

Bermondsey Care for the Elderly’s Christmas Day Party!

If you are a pensioner living in north Southwark (postal code SE16, SE1) and would like to join us on Christmas Day then please call Coral/Toni at the Beormund Centre on 020 7237 9313 or email. Closing date is Friday 7th December. Transport is provided and you will recieved a 3-course Christmas lunch, Christmas tea, professional entertainment and goodies throughout the day. Christmas parcel and £5 to go home with. Invitations are on a first-come-first-served basis.

 

 

Don’t Be Alone at Christmas – People Care Association

Bacon’s College, Timber Pond Road, Rotherhithe, SE16, 6AT 

Doors open at 11am and there will be a free raffle and an entertainer! For dinner, guests will enjoy traditional turkey with all the trimmings (or lamb as an alternative). There are vegetarian, Caribbean, Asian, diabetic and liquidised alternatives, if you prefer. There’ll also be Christmas pudding to follow! You’ll also recieve a small glass of port, Stilton and biscuits to round off the meal. A light tea in a takeaway box and grocery voucher will also be available so you can choose something to have in the next few days.

People Care Association provides free transport to and from the venue, for any guests living in Southwark – and can cater for those with wheelchairs and disabilities. You will need to give plenty of notice if you require transport. The deadline for booking is Sunday 16th December.

South London Cares brings people aged 65 and over, together with their younger neighbours for fun, friendship and laughter across Southwark and Lambeth.

From October 2018 – March 2019 they’re running their Winter Wellbeing project, supporting older neighbours to stay warm, active, healthy and connected.

What they do:

  • Deliver blankets, hats, gloves and thermal socks
  • Winter Grants of up to £100, which can be used for high bills, winter coats and other items to help battle the cold.
  • Connect people to organisations who can provide benefits and energy saving advice
  • 24 free social clubs that run year round (including, film nights, technology workshops, trips etc.).
  • Befriending

If you would like to refer someone over 65 to the project, please email Elyssa with their name, DOB, telephone number and what support they might need – they’ll be in touch with them within a week.

South London Cares

Winter Wellbeing Project

South London Cares brings people aged 65 and over, together with their younger neighbours for fun, friendship and laughter across Southwark and Lambeth.

Bags of Taste

Learn to cook delicious recipes from around the world that cost less than £1 per head. At the end of every lesson you can buy bags of ingredients at a cost of £3.00 each, with enough food included for four meals, so you can try cooking it again (and again) at home.

Charting the Mayflower

In 1620 a group of people left England to start a new life across the Atlantic. 2020 marks the 400th anniversary of the departure of the Mayflower from the river’s edge in Rotherhithe.

On Thursday 22nd November, a free community lantern procession will take place in Rotherhithe and Bermondsey to mark the beginning of Illuminate Rotherhithe. It will begin at Mayflower Park at 5pm and arrive at Kings Stairs Gardens. Everyone is welcome to the free lantern-making workshops where they can make a lantern for the procession. Tea Break Theatre

A drop-in group for adults which embodies the belief that theatre-making can improve wellbeing and confidence. Tea, cake and a chat, followed by a gentle workshop to make friends, tell stories and share laughter. Fore more information, please see their leaflet or contact Lucy.

 

Men’s Shed Association

London Bubble Workshop, 5 Elephant Lane, SE16 4JD

 

Rotherhithe Shed

Set up in partnership by Bubble Theatre and Time & Talents, it aims to bring together older folks to put their practical skills to good use – fixing, making, whittling, drilling, sawing and generally tinkering.

Sessions are held twice a week on Monday mornings and Thursday afternoons (click for schedule), in a well equipped workshop where participants can work together on a range of practical activities. Skilled artists and technical experts are available to support the participants, and project ideas are strongly encouraged and developed. If you have something that needs mending or maintaining, be it a wobbly chair or a squeaky bike bring it along. Or if you want to help make and paint the new sign for the shed, or just make the tea – you are welcome.
